SHKP Volunteer Team wins Social Welfare Department Highest Service Hours and Best Family Volunteer awards

21 December 2009

Sun Hung Kai Properties' SHKP Volunteer Team recently won a Highest Service Hours merit award from the Social Welfare Department for 50,000 hours of service in 2008. The department also named the team’s Mak Hing-cheong as one of six Best Family Volunteers. The Volunteer Team was set up six years ago and has over 1,400 members.

Enthusiasm praised

Selina Tsang, wife of the Chief Executive, presided over the award presentation ceremony. The awards recognized outstanding volunteers for their hard work last year. SHKP volunteers served the community in their leisure time and earned a Highest Service Hours merit award. They helped the needy in various ways and participated in a number of long-term initiatives. Examples include using their professional skills to help elderly residents affected by the redevelopment of housing estates relocate to new homes and helping underprivileged children in Tin Shui Wai with their personal development.

Encouraging family volunteering

The Social Welfare Department introduced its Best Family Volunteer Recognition scheme this year to encourage family volunteer teams to serve the community and enhance the quality of family life. This scheme assesses family volunteers on turnout, commitment and service. SHKP’s Mak Hing-cheong and his family were named Best Family Volunteer. Mr Mak said: “Volunteering helps me and my family build closer ties. At the same time, my children learn interpersonal skills.”

Dedication continues

Volunteer Team leader Michelle Leung said that membership and service hours have risen continuously, showing growing enthusiasm. The Team will continue to work with social welfare groups to help people in need, upholding its commitment to the community and contributing to society. She encouraged colleagues and their families to join and help build a harmonious way of life.
